How to post a picture in a message.

Well, it's not as complicated as you think. The first thing to understand is you are not uploading your pictures to the forum, you are remote hosting them somewhere else and linking to them so the image can be seen in your message.

Step one, you need to get an account at a photo hosting site. You can get a free account with limited picture sizes, resolutions, and views at sites like Photo bucket or Flicker, but eventually you will end up wanting one where you pay for your membership so you can enjoy all the features. Once you get your account set up and pictures uploaded you need to get the link for the picture. On smugmug simply right click on the picture you want to post and select "copy image location".
Now that you have your pictures hosted and you have your image link you need to wrap the 'tags' around the link. You can do this by clicking the button at the top of the text box marked Img*, then paste your image link, then close the 'tag' by clicking the Img* button again. This will result in text that looks like this, except I have put in asterisks *** to break up the code to make the image fail so you can see the text [*img]http://muddyrabbit.smugmug.com/photos/622238132_hcC38-M.jpg[/*img]

That text, minus the **, results in a picture everyone can see:
